Indices closed in green territory Tuesday. Merck, United Technologies and Cisco led the Dow’s ascent. Stocks stepped up amid a spate of earnings news. Wells Fargo posted quarterly data. Earnings hit 73 cents a share, exceeding street expectations by a penny. Citigroup’s numbers, however, were less impressive. The company earned 38 cents a share, down from 43 cents a year earlier, and shy of an expected profit of 48 cents a share. On another note, Intel dipped today following a JPMorgan ratings downgrade to “neutral” from “overweight.” Elsewhere, crude oil tacked on $2.01 to settle at $100.71 a barrel. Looking ahead, monthly producer price data and quarterly earnings from Goldman Sachs will be released tomorrow.
