Stocks gained on a variety of economic news. Inflation ticked up slightly more than expected in January. The Consumer Price Index rose 0.5% last month, versus economists’ forecasts of a 0.3% upswing. Meanwhile, core inflation in January edged up 0.3%. On another note, retail sales decreased in January. Sales slipped 0.3% last month versus economists’ expectations of a 0.2% gain. Looking ahead, earnings reports are due after the closing bell from Cisco and Applied Materials.
