Indices closed out in red territory Tuesday. 3M led the Dow’s descent after reporting projected full-year earnings that fell short of estimates. Technology shares such as Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Cisco bunked the downward trend, however, moving higher amid the release of respectable outlook details from Broadcom and a good showing today for Apple. Broadcom said third-quarter sales would be $1.9 billion to $2 billion while analysts estimated sales of $1.93 billion. Meanwhile, Apple stepped up 1.23 percent to close at $403.41. Elsewhere, crude oil tacked on 39 cents to settle at $99.59 a barrel. Amazon posted quarterly data after the closing bell. The e-commerce titan said second-quarter net income dipped 8% to $191 million, or 41 cents a share, from $207 million, or 45 cents, a year ago. Earnings season continues tomorrow with numbers due from the likes of Boeing, ConocoPhillips and Visa.
