Mixed Moves

Indices ended mixed Thursday. The Dow and S&P 500 closed out in the green. The Nasdaq shed some points. Alcoa, Kraft Foods, and Wal-Mart led the Dow’s ascent. Trading was mixed amid the release of varied earnings reports. Microsoft issued details that exceeded expectations. Net income climbed 6.1 percent to $5.74 billion, or 68 cents a share, from $5.41 billion, or 62 cents, a year ago. Meanwhile, Chubb Corp. posted less impressive data. The insurer of commercial property and high-end homes said third-quarter net income fell to $298 million, or $1.04 a share, from $572 million, or $1.80, a year earlier. On another note, existing-home sales declined 3 percent in September, as anticipated, to a pace of 4.91 million annualized units. Looking ahead, General Electric and Schlumberger are set to announce quarterly figures tomorrow.
