Trading ended with mixed moves on Thursday. The Dow closed with slight gains while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq shed some points. A variety of economic news led to a mixed finish. Initial jobless claims increased last week. Department of Labor data showed new claims climbed by 6,000 to 229,000 for the week ended March 9, versus expectations of 225,000. On another note, Commerce Department data showed new home sales fell 6.9% to an annual rate of 607,000 units in January. December’s result was upwardly revised to 652,000 units from the previously reported 621,000.
