In the United States, the proportion of total disposable personal income that is spent on major categories is approximately as follows:

  • Personal Savings 5%;
  • Food 18%;
  • Transportation 12%;
  • Clothing, accessories, upkeep 9%;
  • Medical Care 6%;
  • Recreation 5%;
  • Other Expenditures 18%;
  • Housing Total 27% (Sum of Shelter through furnishings):
    • Shelter 14%;
    • Utilities 4%;
    • Household Operation 4%, and

    The total should equal 100% of your income.

Although these percentages are typical, each individual family must decide how to best spend its income. The percentages should vary slightly for each family.
